Royal Gorge Bridge Park – a MUST VISIT in Colorado

We took a short road trip to the Royal Gorge Bridge Park in Cañon City, about 1.25 hrs south-west of Colorado Springs, Colorado (~2.5hrs South of Denver). It’s a beautiful bridge and amusement park with many interesting attractions within the park. For the general admission, you can: enter the park, visit/cross the Royal Gorge Bridge, enjoy many breathtaking views on the bridge and around the bridge at observation points, take a Aerial Gondola ride 2,200 feet across the Gorge and 1,200 feet across the Arkansas River, you can go to the Plaza Theatre, enjoy the Children’s Playland and Visitor Center. For extra cost you can enjoy: Zipline, a Skycoaster, and rock climb the Via Ferrata.

When we arrived it was clear but cloudy, with no rain. We were hoping we could spend the day to enjoy the park. However, the storm came in half-way across the bridge and the rain started to come down harder. We had to decide whether to keep going across or turn back. We were a little scared to get stuck on the far side of the bridge. But we decided to go for it, and cross the bridge. By the time we crossed, the rain was coming down harder and we needed to look for a place to stay dry and wait out the rain. We went into the Plaza Theatre for a little while to watch a couple of historical movies about the park and also enjoy some exotic bird shows that were presented. After a while we heard that the rain lightened up, but a lightning storm was about 5 mins away. We decided to RUSH back across the bridge to go home. The Royal Gorge Bridge, know as ‘America’s Bridge’ is 1000 feet above the Arkansas river and is one of the world’s highest suspension bridges, and straddles the canyon.

Although we didn’t get to enjoy all the activities at the park due to the winds and rain, they didn’t close, but we decided we’d have to come back someday to enjoy and experience the rest. It seems like, with clear, sunny weather you can probably spend the whole day enjoying all the activities. It really is a beautiful park. I can’t wait to go back again and enjoy the gondola ridge, zip lining, and maybe a little rock climbing on the Via Ferrata. I wouldn’t mind visiting the Beer Garden, bars and restaurants too!
